The Best Sandwich Bread Recipe

My best friend Lauren and I go on these baking binges when we have time, to find “The Best Recipe For” whatever we need at the moment.  So the other day, while I was lounging in the sunshine, avoiding work, she called me up saying:

“I’ve found it! The best ever bread recipe!”

Obviously we made a date for her to come over and bake so that we could chit chat.  And later eat fresh bread.

Honey Multigrain Whole Wheat Bread
Adapted from Karen from food.com

  • 1 envelope or 2 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast
  • 2 cups water, warm
  • 1/4 cup butter, or butter substitute
  • 1/8 cup molasses plus extra for drinking in your handy shot glass on the side
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup multi-grain flour
  • 1  cup white flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour1. Dissolve the yeast into the water

    2. In a separate bowl, mix together the butter, molasses, honey and salt.  Take a shot of molasses.  You deserve it, and it’s delicious

    3.  Add the water and yeast, and stir well

    4.  Add the flours one cup at a time until everything is mixed together

    5.  On a clean and floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic

    6.  In a well oiled bowl, let dough rise for one hour, or until doubled

    7.  Punch dough down, and then let it rest until it’s relaxed again

    8.  Divide dough into two evenly sized loaves.  Put one aside while you form your loaf

    9.  Form your loaf and place into greased pans.  Check out this YouTube video to show you how I do it

    10.  Let it rise again for 1 hour

    11.  Bake at 370* for 35-40 minutes.

  1. Mmm the ice cream that you made is looking mighty good! I love lemon poppyseed and this is certainly the first time I’ve heard of it as an ice cream flavor.

    • I saw it somewhere online… Lime poppyseed as an Israeli flavour of gelato or ice cream… I really wish I knew where it was. There were a few other interesting ones too.

  2. The bread turned out to be amazing! I just tried a little peace while its still warm, and now I have to hold myself back not to stuff my face with it 😀 great recipe, thanks alot!

  3. What a great bread recipe! Perfect: my last piece of homebaked bread was spoiled today, so I have to make some more in the evening. Is the taste of the molasses pretty dominant? I am not such a fan of it as your are 😉

    • I don’t think it is at all. The molasses is there to give it a little colour, and a little glue. The recipe makes two loaves, so really only 1/16 of a cup goes into each loaf. I totally can’t taste it (but my taste buds might be skewed), and molasses disliking Boyfriend doesn’t taste it. Boyfriend doesn’t even like gingerbread cookies because they’re too molasses-y, so I think that’s a pretty good sign.

Let me know what you think of the recipe if you end up trying it out!
