When I was little, I dreamed of having a pen-pal. I would watch Charlie Brown holiday specials and be so jealous of Charlie Brown. He had a pen pal! I wanted a pen-pal! I would have been incredibly happy to have Charlie Brown as my pen-pal, even though I was more of a Peppermint Patty fan. This month I finally (sort of) got my chance.
I am legitimately beyond excited to participate in my first Foodie Pen Pal exchange, and it was blow my mind awesome! I signed up in late May, and I waited for the 5th to come when I was assigned my Foodie Pen Pal, and go shopping! What lady doesn’t love shopping for food? I love it, and I loved it even more when I got to get creative and find unique treats made locally to send across Canada.
I recieved a package from Jacqueline from Cooking with Jax. I think Jacqueline and I would get along famously. She loves vanilla as much as I do, and everything was so thoughtfully packaged and labelled. Everything homemade that she sent me was found on her website, and she was so thoughtful to include a recipe for coconut milk whipping cream for my lactose intolerance! I’m still really sad about having to recently cut out cow-dairy all together and I’m so glad that I have this handmade card that’s already found its way into my recipe folder permanently. Wesley really liked everything too. The second I had it spread out and ready to photograph, he came and sniffed everything before sitting on it and smiling as if to say “Thanks for my new things!”
My awesome spread and magnet she sent me, everything well thought through and detailed in her handwritten letter. She sent me a can of coconut milk along with the recipe for Coconut Milk Whipped Cream. Cinnamon honey sticks from DavidsTea, which remind me of the local honey farm I grew up near. I would take my dollar that I earned helping my mum around the house and go down and buy four honey sticks and suck them up in the kiddie pool in the backyard. It’s not so classy of me to sit in a kiddie pool now, and my balcony isn’t big enough for it, but they are perfect for my purse!
Jacqueline has a similar vanilla philosophy as I do. More is best! I got no fewer than three individual vanilla products, tea, homemade vanilla sugar, and vanilla beans with directions for making my own. Which is a good thing, because I’m almost out!
These two I was most excited for! Homemade Holy Crap Inspired Breakfast Cereal and Homemade Granola. I haven’t tried them yet, because I’m too afraid that I’ll eat them in one sitting and then not have enough grocery money in my weekly budget to pedal hard down to the bulk food store and get all the ingredients. I’m planning ahead, so I can eat it in the morning, and then buy the extra ingredients I need in the afternoon. Good plan?
Thanks so much from the bottom of my stomach to the lovely, lovely Jax of “Cooking with Jax”. I couldn’t have asked for a better Pen Pal!
In the great words of Lindsay, the brains and brawn behind Foodie PenPals, here’s something she’s given to all participants to share about the Foodie Pen Pal program
And now it’s time for some details about Foodie Penpals. In case you’re a new reader, here’s a reminder of what the program is all about:
-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
-Foodie Penplas is open to US & Canadian residents. Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.
If you’re interested in participating for July, please CLICK HERE to fill out the participation form and read the terms and conditions.
You must submit your information by July 4th as pairings will be emailed on July 5th!
*If you’re from somewhere besides the US, Canada or Europe and want to participate, send me (Lindsay) an email and I’ll see if we get enough interest this month!
